What makes a station "complete"?
A complete weather station measures wind and rain as well as temperature, humidity and pressure. That is the dividing line. A basic forecaster gives you temperature and a weather symbol; a complete station gives you wind speed, wind direction and rainfall from your own garden, which is what you need to make decisions rather than just read numbers. If wind and rain do not matter to you, our Basic Home Weather Stations range is simpler and cheaper.
5-in-1, 7-in-1 or 8-in-1?
The number counts the measurements taken by the outdoor sensor array. A 5-in-1 such as the ACCUR8 DWS5100 or the Bresser 7002510 covers temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and rainfall. A 7-in-1 such as the ACCUR8 DWS7100, the Bresser Clearview or the National Geographic 7-in-1 adds UV index and light intensity, which matter if you grow under glass, manage a garden seriously, or want be aware of sunburn risk. An 8-in-1, like the Bresser Sahara TB, adds heat-stress index.
WiFi, apps and putting your data online
Most stations in this range connect to your home network and send readings to an online service, so you can check conditions from anywhere and scroll back through history. Which service depends on the brand rather than on us: ACCUR8 stations upload to Weather Underground and are viewed through its free app and/or website. Bresser and National Geographic models use the Bresser app. The Bresser ClimateConnect works with Tuya smart home devices. Davis stations publish through the WeatherLink Console or WeatherLink Live. Choosing by budget
ACCUR8 sit at the accessible end and do everything most homes need — the ACCUR8 5-in-1 is a good starting point. Davis is a different class — a professional platform, made in the USA, expandable with soil, leaf, UV and solar sensors, and the choice if the data has to be reliable years from now rather than interesting this weekend. Start with the Vantage Vue for a home or the Vantage Pro2 for a farm or business.
Siting matters more than price
The most common cause of disappointing readings is position, not the station. The anemometer wants height and clear air, away from buildings and trees. The rain collector needs to be level, in the open, with nothing overhanging it. The temperature sensor needs shade and airflow. A well-sited mid-range station will outperform a badly sited expensive one every time.
