Barometer gifts — the safe choice
A barometer is the present people keep. It needs no batteries, no app and no wifi password, it works for decades, and it hangs on a wall where it gets looked at every day. Most of the barometers in this price band are made by TFA Dostmann in Germany, using aneroid movements in hand-finished wooden cases, and most combine a barometer with a thermometer and a hygrometer so the recipient can read pressure, temperature and humidity at a glance.
Solid oak and walnut barometers
The wooden-cased barometer is the traditional gift and the one we sell most of. In oak there is the 20.1079.01 oak barometer, the taller 42cm solid oak, the natural oak 42cm and the 33.7cm oak. In walnut, the classic walnut barometer, the compact 19.5cm, the 27.5cm and 27cm versions, the 33.7cm walnut, the 42cm walnut and oak and the Domatic in walnut. There is also pine and a root-timber finish if you want something less expected.
Banjo barometers
The banjo is the shape people picture when they think of a barometer — the tapered wall-mounted case with the dial at the bottom. We stock it in oak, a second oak version, walnut and mahogany. These are the most gift-like objects on the page and the ones most likely to end up in a hallway rather than a study.
Brass, slate and contemporary finishes
Not everyone wants wood. The brass barometer suits a boat, a porch or a nautical room. The 37cm natural slate barometer is the most striking piece here and reads as a design object rather than an instrument. Which barometer, and where does it go?
Size is the thing people get wrong. A 19–28cm barometer suits a small hallway, a study or a kitchen; 33–42cm needs a proper wall and looks lost anywhere smaller. Match the wood to the room rather than to the price — oak reads lighter and more rustic, walnut and mahogany darker and more formal. Every barometer needs setting to your altitude when it arrives, which takes about a minute with the small screw on the back and a check against the Met Office pressure for your area; after that it needs nothing at all. Falling pressure means unsettled weather on the way, rising means it is clearing, and a fast change in either direction matters more than the number itself.
