Banjo or straight?
The banjo barometer is the classic English shape — a rounded body with the barometer dial at the centre, usually with a thermometer above and a hygrometer or mirror below. See the full banjo barometer range, from the natural finish at £36.95 and oak at £42.95 up to the mahogany and walnut designs.
Straight and rectangular cases suit a narrower wall or a modern hallway. The 27.5cm oak barometer, 27.5cm walnut version and 27.5cm pine version are all the same slim upright shape in three different timbers.
Oak, walnut, mahogany, beech and pine
Oak is the most popular finish and the widest choice, from the solid oak barometer at £34.99 and indoor solid oak design through to the 33.7cm oak barometer. Walnut gives a darker, warmer tone — see the walnut barometer at £52.99, the 33.7cm walnut and the Domatic walnut barometer.
For something lighter there is the beech barometer at £34.99, and for a more unusual grain the 33.7cm root timber design. The barometer with metal trim pairs timber with a brushed metal surround.
Reading a wooden barometer
Set the brass pointer to match the needle, then check again in a few hours. If the needle has moved above the pointer, pressure is rising and conditions are likely to improve. Falling pressure suggests unsettled or wet weather on the way. It is the direction of change that tells you something, not the number itself.
Most of these cases also carry a thermometer and a hygrometer. Indoor humidity between 40% and 60% is generally considered comfortable, and worth watching if you have condensation, damp or a wooden instrument in the room. We also sell hygrometers separately.
Sizes and finishes
Small barometers from around 20cm suit a study or downstairs cloakroom — the 19.5cm oak barometer and 19.5cm walnut barometer are the compact options. Mid-size designs around 27cm to 34cm are the usual choice for a living room.
Larger wall designs from 42cm upwards make a feature above a fireplace or in a hallway: the 42cm solid oak, 42cm natural oak and 42cm walnut and oak versions. Measure your wall first and allow clear space around the case.

A word on antiques
These are new instruments in traditional styling, not antiques. They arrive calibrated, guaranteed and ready to hang — with the reliability of a modern aneroid movement behind the classic case. Most are made by TFA Dostmann in Germany; the hand-finished FCC 1035 barometer is British made, and the rest of that range is on our FCC page.
