Modern barometers take the same reliable aneroid movement found in a traditional wall barometer and put it behind clean, contemporary design — glass, brushed and polished metal, stainless steel and natural slate, with minimal dials that suit a modern interior.
Many combine barometer, thermometer and hygrometer in a single slim wall panel, so you can read atmospheric pressure, temperature and relative humidity at a glance. Others are supplied as matching sets of separate dials.

Why choose a modern barometer?
The mechanism is identical to a traditional wooden barometer — a sealed aneroid capsule that expands and contracts with atmospheric pressure, moving the needle. Only the styling differs. You get the same accuracy in a case designed for a contemporary room.
The range starts with the 13.5cm silver barometer at £30.95 and the 35cm silver design, and runs up to statement pieces such as the Sputnik barometer and its alternative Sputnik finish.
Reading pressure
Set the adjustable pointer to match the needle, then check again a few hours later. Needle above the pointer means pressure is rising, which usually signals improving weather. Needle below means falling pressure and more unsettled conditions ahead. It is the direction of travel that matters, not the absolute number.
Combination instruments
Most modern designs include three instruments: a barometer for pressure, a thermometer for temperature and a hygrometer for relative humidity. The 28.2cm silver set and its blue and silver version are typical three-dial panels, as is the blue, white and silver design.
Indoor humidity between 40% and 60% is generally considered comfortable, and worth watching if you have condensation, damp or a musical instrument in the room. Standalone hygrometers are available separately if you only need humidity.
Materials and finishes
Brushed and polished metal suits a kitchen, office or hallway — see the 35cm silver barometer, the 38.5cm grey design and the model with metal trim. Where timber is combined with a modern face, as on the oak 20-1079-01 barometer, the effect is warmer without being traditional.

Sizes
Compact dials from around 13cm to 22cm suit a desk wall, hallway or small kitchen — the 22.5cm design is a good middle option. Mid-size models between 24cm and 30cm, such as the 24cm barometer and the 29cm barometer, are the most popular. Anything from 35cm upwards reads clearly across a room.
No power required
